    Sid Leicester

In motocross there are many special people but, even among them Sid Leicester, stood out. Sid was universally liked. He had been racing since 1952 and was seventy one when he died. He was for many years a leading light in the Sporting Elite club along with his close mates Alan Barley and Ernie Gyles. He worked all his life and never asked for anything, believing in self sufficiency like most of his generation.

He started out on the various machines including a Tribsa which were the machines of the day but first came to my notice in the sixties on a Triumph Wasp when he adopted his trademark yellow and black striped jersey. He went on to ride CCMs, both the early and late models, then switched to his favourite Eastwood Hagon Yamaha, which he kept. In his SMX career, he rode 250 Honda two strokes for many years before switching to one of the first 450 Hondas sold in this country, letting Dave Thorpe win a race on it in its debut meeting. He rode his Honda in his last race but had been very excited about a twinshock 250 Maico he had just bought.

He joined SMX after a short retirement and rode in the Over 50s class and then the Over 60s enjoying many a scrap with Ken Leon who he beat to win the Over 70s crown, as well as Gerry Wignall, another approaching the seventies milestone
